A new variant yet to be fully understood
Trachycarpus sp. ‘Kinla Hill’ is one of the most recent and enigmatic additions to the genus. Discovered in the mountains of northwestern Yunnan, around 25 km from the locality where T. princeps grows, it was for a time marketed as T. princeps ‘New Form’. However, its more robust habit, large regularly divided leaves and whitish undersides have led it to be regarded as a distinct entity, whose taxonomic position remains unresolved. In cultivation, it also stands out for its rapid growth and ease of germination.
Habitat: Mountain slopes and ridges, forming wild populations in elevated, humid areas.
Distribution: Northwestern Yunnan, China, near the type locality of Trachycarpus princeps.
Description: Robust, single-stemmed palm, with broad, regularly divided palmate leaves, green on the upper surface and whitish on the underside, forming a dense and elegant crown.
