A critically endangered Sabal
Scientifically described in 2019, Sabal lougheediana is one of the most recently recognised Sabal species and, at the same time, one of the most threatened. It is endemic to Bonaire, where in 2018 only 25 adult specimens were found in the wild, within an area of less than 1 km². The species also faces strong pressure from introduced herbivores, particularly goats and feral donkeys, which consume seedlings and young plants, severely hindering its natural regeneration.
Habitat: Flat, open limestone terraces with very sparse vegetation, close to sea level.
Distribution: Endemic to Bonaire, in the southern Caribbean, where it is concentrated in a small area of the island.
Description: Single-stemmed palm, up to 7 metres tall, with a relatively slender trunk and very prominent leaf scars, a compact crown and costapalmate leaves with stiff, erect segments, white flowers and globose black fruits.
