The jíbaro’s pava palm
Sabal causiarum is closely associated with one of Puerto Rico’s most emblematic traditions: the pava, the traditional hat of the jíbaros. Its young leaves were traditionally harvested and prepared to obtain the fibres used to weave these hats, as well as baskets, mats and other handicrafts. The pava, worn for generations by farmers and agricultural workers to protect themselves from the sun, evolved from a simple work garment into a true symbol of Puerto Rican identity and pride.
Habitat: Open forests, dry areas and rocky or well-drained soils.
Distribution: Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and some islands of the Lesser Antilles.
Description: Single-stemmed palm, up to 15 metres tall, with an impressive smooth grey trunk up to 70 cm in diameter, costapalmate leaves up to 2 metres long, strongly arching, and hanging inflorescences that exceed the length of the leaves and produce small black fruits.
