A palm with millions of years of history
Considered by some fossil records to be one of the oldest palms, Allagoptera arenaria appears to retain the essence of an ancestral lineage. Its name derives from the Greek allage («change») and pteron («wing»), referring to the curious changing and swirling pattern of its feather-like leaves, which grow in different planes and give this distinctive palm a particularly dynamic and exotic appearance.
Habitat: Coastal dunes and restingas, on sandy soils, often close to the high-tide line.
Distribution: Atlantic coast of eastern and southeastern Brazil.
Description: Rhizomatous, hermaphroditic and virtually trunkless palm, up to 1.8 metres tall, with an underground stem, bright green to silvery pinnate leaves and small yellowish fruits.
