The legendary palm grove of Vai

At the easternmost tip of Crete, Phoenix theophrastii forms at Vai the largest and most spectacular natural palm grove of the species, a true oasis comprising hundreds of specimens in a humid, sandy valley beside the sea. This exceptional site, unique in Europe for its extent, has even given rise to ancient legends attributing its origin to dates discarded by Arab sailors, although today we know that it is a natural population of this distinctive Cretan palm.

Habitat: In arid coastal areas, especially in ravines and gorges.

Distribution: Specimen originating from the population of Vai, in eastern Crete.

Description: Multi-stemmed, dioecious palm tree, up to 15 meters, trunk with remains of leaves or marked scars, pinnate leaves of bluish-silver color 2-3 meters long, pale yellow interfoliar inflorescence and small yellowish-brown dates.
