The lost Phoenix of the Andamans
For decades, Phoenix andamanensis was known only from old herbarium collections and historical references, until wild populations were rediscovered in the Andaman Islands. Its scarcity and extremely restricted distribution make it one of the rarest and least-known date palms, while its elegant, tropical appearance, with regularly arranged leaves and very few spines, sets it notably apart from many other species in the genus.
Habitat: Natural rainforest and relatively undisturbed scrub, mainly on elevated ground on the islands.
Distribution: Endemic to the Andaman Islands, India, where highly localised populations are known.
Description: Single-stemmed palm, up to 5 metres tall, with a slender trunk around 15 cm in diameter, pinnate leaves up to 2.4 metres long, with narrow leaflets regularly arranged in a single plane, few spines and oblong fruits.
