The small but mighty Australian Livistona
The name Livistona muelleri honours Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, one of the most important botanists involved in the study of Australian flora during the 19th century. A little-known species outside specialised collections, yet particularly interesting for combining the unmistakable tropical appearance of Livistona palms with a considerably more compact stature than many of its congeners.
Habitat: Open forests and wooded savannas, on sandy soils.
Distribution: Northern Queensland and southern New Guinea.
Description: Single-stemmed, hermaphroditic palm, up to 10 metres tall, with a greyish trunk, green palmate leaves up to 2 metres long, spiny petioles, yellowish inflorescences and small bluish-black fruits.
