BANGALOW PALM (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana)

A palm tree to transport water

The common name of this lustrous, tropical-looking queen palm, bangalow, means ‘basket for carrying water’ in the Aboriginal language. By cleverly folding the blade of this palm tree, using the petiole as a handle, the indigenous people of Australia create an airtight, bowl-like container that they use to transport liquids.
