A Brahea almost like a Washingtonia
Brahea brandegeei is one of the most distinctive Brahea palms of Baja California, adapted to life in the arid canyons and mountain oases of the southern peninsula. Unlike other species in the genus, it has relatively fast growth, a trunk often covered by persistent leaf bases, and remarkable tolerance of hot, dry conditions, characteristics reminiscent of the imposing Washingtonia. Indeed, once these leaf bases are shed, its silhouette can look surprisingly similar to that of a very slender Washingtonia.
Habitat: Canyons, gorges and mountain slopes in desert and dry areas.
Distribution: Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico.
Description: Single-stemmed palm, up to 14 metres tall, with a trunk around 30 cm in diameter, green costapalmate leaves with a glaucous underside, petioles armed with small yellowish teeth and globose fruits that turn yellow when ripe.
