A Brahea with a disputed identity
Although many botanists currently treat this species as a synonym of B. armata, the populations from San Carlos are believed to possibly be the result of natural hybridisation between B. armata and B. brandegeei—that is, occurring spontaneously in nature rather than being created by humans. The influence of B. brandegeei is particularly evident in its leaves, which are softer and more elegantly pendulous, with a habit reminiscent of some Livistona species.
Habitat: Arid and semi-arid areas, in dry, sunny terrain.
Distribution: Surroundings of San Carlos Bay, Sonora, Mexico.
Description: Single-stemmed palm, up to 6 metres tall, with bluish-green to icy blue costapalmate leaves, softer and more gracefully arching than those of Brahea armata, spiny petioles and a faster growth rate.
