The little giant of Vulcano
Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’ is an exceptionally compact selection of the European fan palm, originating from the island of Vulcano in the Aeolian Islands. Its appearance is striking for the combination of its small size, rigid dark green leaves and remarkably dense, orderly growth. In 2022, it was formally described as a cultivar, distinguished by its compact habit and distinctive ornamental characteristics. It is propagated by division of suckers to faithfully preserve these traits.
Habitat: No natural populations exist.
Distribution: Cultivated variety developed on the island of Vulcano in Sicily.
Description: Multistemmed, compact palm, up to 2 metres tall, with trunks densely covered in dark fibres, stiff dark green costapalmate leaves and a very dense, orderly crown.
